Our 16’s and 17’s teams traveled to Hartford, CT for the New England Winterfest #2 over Martin Luther King Jr weekend, January 18-20th and followed up on the success of our younger teams the week before with a great weekend of their own.  Our 5 teams combined for a 29-9 record (a 76% winning percentage) and 8 undefeated pools.

 

17 Blue competed in the 17 USA Division and was a perfect 6-0, 12-0 through the first two days of the tournament.  On Saturday, they won their 3 matches against GVC Elite (25-12, 25-14), Pumas Ebony (25-7, 25-16) and Alliance Tsunami (25-14, 25-20), winning their pool and advancing to the top half of the division for Day 2.  On Sunday, they had similar success, defeating ENVY Tsunami, BBGC Crush 17-1 and South County Open.  With another pool win they advanced to the Gold bracket with the top 8 teams in the division.  In the playoffs, they lost a tough 3-set match to the eventual champions, BBGC Crush 17-2 (22-25, 25-22, 12-15) to finish in a tie for 5th place out of 32 teams.

 

17 Gold played in the 17 Club Division and won their opening pool with an undefeated 3-0 record.  They beat both ENVY Lightning and Legacy Premier 2-0 and Queens Elite 2-1 (25-15, 21-25, 15-9).  On Day 2, they played in a 3-team mini-pool and split their 2 matches, losing a close one to Canadian team Faucons Black 2-1 (25-16, 24-26, 13-15) and then beating Brooklyn Elite Skyline, also 2-1 (25-12, 11-25, 15-12).  They came in second place in the pool based on set percentage and advanced to the Silver Medal bracket, where they won their first match 2-0 against Performance Navy before losing in the final 2-0 to B&B Black.  For the weekend, they went 4-1 against fellow GEVA teams and finished in 6th place out of 24 teams.

 

16 Blue was in the 16 USA Division and won their first 7 matches, reaching the quarterfinals of the Gold Medal bracket and finishing in 5th place out of 56 teams.  On Saturday, they won their first 2 matches 2-0 over TCVBC Black and Alliance Lightning before winning a marathon battle over Avidity Diamond 2-1 (31-29, 23-25, 15-12).  They lost their first set on Sunday, but bounced right back to win their next six, defeating Long Island Fury 2-1 (17-25, 25-19, 15-11) and both MGA and Husky New England Black 2-0.  They started the Gold Medal playoffs with a 2-0 win over ENVY Blizzard, but then fell to SOSVBC 2-1 (25-23, 22-25, 9-15) to close out the tournament and claim 5th place.

 

16 Gold was also in the 16 USA Division and had an excellent tournament, finishing 19th out of 56 teams.  They went undefeated in their opening pool on Saturday, beating SLAM Sharks 2-0, ENVY Blizzard 2-1 (20-25, 25-15, 15-8) and Long Island United 2-0.  On Sunday, they faced some tougher competition with all 3 matches going to 3 sets.  They beat NY Stealth Attack to open the day, then fell to Legacy National and NY Elite Black (25-21, 25-27, 13-15).  Their third place finish in the pool advanced them to the Silver Medal bracket on Monday, where they beat Performance Navy 2-0 (25-20, 25-11) before falling to Gators Black 2-0 in the bracket finals.

 

16 Black played up a level in the 16 USA Division and also did well.  They lost their first two matches but came back strong to finish the tournament on a 6-match winning streak and a win in their Flight 1 playoff bracket.  Saturday started with 2-0 losses to Gators Black and CMASS Flamingo before a 2-0 (25-18, 25-16) win over Maine Jrs Silver to finish third in the pool.  On Sunday they went undefeated, beating Alliance Ice 2-0, SLAM Sharks 2-1 and Mill City Black 2-1 in a long 3-setter (25-11, 24-26, 17-15).  In the playoffs, they beat Alliance Lightning 2-0 and Latitude 42 Blue 2-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-11) to win the bracket.
